American scientists have discovered a way to eliminate the extra chromosome 21 that is responsible for the formation of Down syndrome. University of Massachusetts specialists say they've never been so close to inventing a cure for the disease.

By working on a gene called XIST, scientists have been able to reduce the impact of the defective chromosome on the entire genotype. Until now, only one defective gene could be corrected.

A new technique developed by American scientists is now to be tested on mouse embryos with trisomy 21. This will test whether the method can be applied to humans. Unfortunately, scientists will probably need many years to perfect the method.
