Dear parents, I am giving you another challenge.

It is not known from today how great influence on the development of our child, from conception music has. Not only soothes hyperactivity, but also educates his future taste, not only musical, sensitizes and is a source of great fun. So it's worth investing some time and kitchen leftovers to create a magic orchestra with your child.
We will need:

  • Empty bottles and cups (e.g. after yogurt, cream, etc.)
  • Rubber bands
  • Food foil, aluminum foil, baking paper, straws, skewer sticks
  • Dry spices, seeds, fruits (rice, porridge, allspice, peppercorn, various types of groats, pasta, etc.)
  • Wires, threads, strings, caps (remove the rubber coating inside)
  • Possibly adhesive tape, crayons, paints, markers / markers, colored / white paper
  • Scissors, knife, cutting board
  • For decoration: beads, ribbons, bows, whatever we want.

Drum or percussion instrument

The simplest of instruments. Just take it empty bottle, cut off the top (so as to create a fairly evenly shaped drum), stretch a piece of food film, fix it by pulling with a rubber band and it's ready! You can also use cream or yogurt cups (preferably half-liter ones). A more difficult version is a double-sided drum. Then we cut off not only the heat, but also the bottom. On one hand, we can draw food foil, on the other hand aluminum or baking paper. Then our drum will produce different sounds. Instead of a cup or bottle we can use roll of toilet paper. Be careful, however, because the durability of a cardboard roll is much less like a plastic cup and bottle.

The surface of the bobbin case is also limited. Personally, I use a herring pail or a large cottage cheese to make the drum (it can also be a cottage cheese pail). I remove the handle and I have a large surface drum. Finally, I recommend decorating the instrument with colored paper, crepe, ribbon or whatever you want. We can also paint with markers and markers in an imaginary pattern. If we can't paint anything because of the slippery surface of the packaging, I recommend sticking a newspaper or a simple card on the entire surface of the sides, and then paint and decorate according to your preferences already on "absorbable" soil.

Tambourine as a second percussion instrument

It is harder challenge. Here, we focus on cutting holes in the walls of our container and fixing it with wires, e.g. caps. Let's put the two caps with the bottoms together, fasten them with a wire and when hitting the bottom they will hit each other. The container can be both plastic and it can be secured by us can earlier. However, the larger the diameter of the container and the lower it is, the closer it will be to its professional counterpart.

Maracas or so-called przeszkadzajka

I change my mind - THIS is the simplest of instruments. To anything (can, bottle, cup, jar, box, anything closed) pour anything dry (cereal, rice, pebbles, beads, allspice ...) and close it ready. Here, let's spend time decorating the instrument. If we use transparent packaging, put in e.g. colored beads. Then our instrument will become beautiful without additional decorations. By making several maracas and using a different "input" each time, we can create different sounds at different heights. I encourage you to experiment. We will get a different sound when using a rice-type inset, a different one if they are large stones, and a different one if we use plastic beads. To make this toy I also recommend a surprise egg package. They are closed, tight and sized to fit our child's hands. We will create then not maracas, but the so-called eggs, which are a variety of maracas.

Guitar, or plucked instrument

We will need it container open on at least one side. Then we wrap it with rubber bands (it's important that they are fairly accurate) and it's ready. For a more durable fastening of the erasers, we can cut cardboard in selected places to attach the erasers to the cuts. We can play with the colors of elastics, instead of using elastics with lines or threads. It all depends on what we have at the moment. If we have a hole on one side, we know which way to pull. If we are two, let us teach the child not to put his fingers deeply, but to jerk his fingers. We can play vertically on such a guitar, but also put the instrument on our knees and play it horizontally. Another option is to use the blocks to build the bender. We fold the longer elements into a rectangle (of such a size that it is convenient to hit the placed strings), then put the elastic bands and "cover" with a second layer of blocks. We have a stable guitar ready to play.

Cymbals, another percussion instrument

We need caps to build this instrument. We can stick them with different materials (e.g. a sheet of paper, a bit of plasticine, aluminum foil, etc.), creating different sounds. We place the selected number of caps between two straws or sticks to skewers, fixing e.g. with plasticine. The resulting cymbals will be great if we build chopsticks to complete the set. To this end, attach a bead to the skewers.

Lord's flute, or attribute of a forest idol

In Poland, this instrument is known as Multanki. We make it from several bottles. We get the right sound after pouring a different amount of water into each. We tune, pouring or pouring a little bit. After tuning, set in the correct order, connect with tape. If we want to record sounds, we can mark the water level on each bottle with a felt-tip pen and pour it out after playing. We play blowing the bottles horizontally. Another way is to use felt-tip pens. We will need them at least 8. Open the felt-tip pen, remove the dye cartridge, cut off the narrow part for drawing, close the bottom again. We do so with everyone, except that we cut everyone 7mm shorter than the previous one. Then we take 2 straws or skewers, from which we will create a scaffolding for our Flute. We attach each felt-tip pen with a string or thread to a stick / straw, ensuring that the felt-tip pen outlets are on one level. And this is the end. We play, blowing a narrow stream of air horizontally to markers.


Tie two wooden spoons with a rubber band at the height of the handle. We play hitting the knee or the inside of the hand.


Form a slightly thicker wire into a circle / ellipse. Before closing, we thread a lot of caps (to protect them from the child we can flatten a little with a hammer). After closing, shaking the beat of the melody.

Desert sand, or African folk instrument

To make this instrument we will need an elongated tube, it may be after a paper towel, a hydraulic pipe, it doesn't matter. However, the harder the tube, the more complicated the process will be. Assuming, however, that the tube is made of cardboard: with a fork or knife or nail, we make small holes forming the diameter and chords of the tube, many at different heights. Insert toothpicks into the holes so that they protrude or are attached to both sides. Close the tube tightly from one side. From the second we pour a small (but not too small, about 1 handful of an adult human into a half meter tube) of sand. We close the tube on the other side, also tightly. Then, gently twisting the tube, we will be able to hear how beautifully the sand pours, creating a melody of the desert ...

Playing music is a great idea to spend time together, and also to show your child that you do not need to be a professional or musician to CREATE sounds that make up the whole world. Speech, singing, birds chirping, roaring wild animals, yawning or even a burp are after all sounds, sounds of life. The musicians say that SILENCE is also a sound.
